Congratulations, you or your significant other is pregnant, or at least you’re wondering if you are.   • Bloating – As you’re body prepares for the baby, there is a lot going on in your tummy. This could make your bloat or make you feel like you’re bloated.
  • Constipation – This can happen due to the hormonal imbalance, not drinking enough water (to compensate for the extra peeing), or if you’re taking Iron Pills, or other reasons.

While these symptoms can indicate pregnancy, it’s important to note that they are also very common symptoms for PMS. Or you could just be getting sick. The only way to know for sure that you’re pregnant in early stages is a pregnancy test.

If you’re worried, they sell tests at local pharmacies like Walgreens or CVS for a fairly cheap price. However if it’s too early into the pregnancy then the test won’t detect it.

If you’re pregnant your probably going through a lot of emotions, worrying if the baby’s healthy, excited to have a baby, scared to have that same baby, mad about your side effects, or probably all of these at the same time. Your hormones are not making it better either! But if you know what to expect then it can help you deal with it more effectively.

When you talk about pregnancy and how long you’ve been pregnant (i.e. 12 weeks, 20 weeks, etc.) it’s measured in something called the Gestation Period. The Gestation period is measured from the first day of your last period. So this could be as far as 3 weeks before you are actually pregnant.

This can make measuring how long you’ve been pregnant confusing. However your first doctors visit after becoming pregnant will go over when your gestation period started and will answer any questions you might have during this confusing time.

Your body is going through some serious changes, hormones are raging, emotions are everywhere, cravings, just to name a few. There are several changes that you should expect in the coming weeks.

You will likely have a change in appetite because your taste buds might change (as you probably guessed, due to hormones). Likely there will be a change in your moods making your more sensitive to your emotions due to the rush of hormones. You could feel exhausted due to your body spending a lot of energy getting ready for the baby. Additionally there will likely be anxiousness due to you worrying about the health of the baby, but assure yourself that it’s going to be okay.

Physical changes occur as well. When you become pregnant your body increases the amount of blood in your body by about 50%! This extreme amount of extra blood is going to help support the baby, but it’s important that you have enough iron for all that extra blood in your body. This is also the reason that you will experience more frequent bathroom breaks. The extra blood, filtered by the kidneys like all other blood, creates excess fluid that goes to the bladder.

This is what you can expect that your baby is doing in the first couple weeks of your pregnancy. It’s worth noting that this measurement is by gestation period. Meaning that week 1 is your period before you got pregnant, week 2 is likely when the conception took place, etc.

Week 2

This is likely when conception takes place. This is roughly when you’ll be ovulating (when a mature egg travels to the uterus) and if you’ve had sex in the last 6 days (how long a sperm can live inside the vagina) could result in the fertilization of the egg (conception).

Week 3

The fertilized egg will attach itself to the walls of the uterus, and in that moment you are officially pregnant. Until the egg implants itself into the walls of the uterus you are not “pregnant.”

Week 4

The baby is roughly the size of a grain of rice (slightly smaller) and the cells are dividing and growing extremely fast. In this stage your baby is starting to develop the digestive system.

Week 6

The baby will begin to produce hormones that go into your uterus and prevent you from having a period.

Week 10

The baby starts having it’s first brain waves.

When you’re pregnant there are things you should be doing to ensure you have the best pregnancy experience. There can be complications during pregnancy and it’s better to catch them earlier rather than later. Prenatal care is usually how you’ll fix these problems.

It’s recommended that for the first 32 weeks of pregnancy you should visit the doctor for regular checkups every four weeks. This will ensure that you will have up to date information on you and your babies health.
